The Film
Logline
Can We Kick It? is a cultural soccer documentary exploring access, opportunity, and the untapped potential within urban communities—shaping the future of soccer in America.
Overview
Soccer is the world’s game—but in the United States, one of its most influential communities has largely been left out of its growth.
Can We Kick It? examines the cultural, structural, and economic barriers that have limited the game’s reach in urban America, while uncovering the talent, stories, and emerging pathways that point toward a different future.
Why We Made This Film
We made Can We Kick It? to tell a story that hasn’t been fully told—one that sits at the intersection of culture, access, and opportunity.
The talent exists. The passion exists. But the pathways, visibility, and investment often do not.
This film explores that gap—and challenges what the future of soccer in America could look like if those barriers were removed.
Director Statement
Akbar Majeed
Can We Kick It? is personal for me. I played soccer when I was younger, but like a lot of kids in urban communities, I eventually shifted toward more visible sports like basketball as I got older. Soccer just wasn’t as present around me culturally. Years later, when I began traveling internationally, I saw how different the game looked in other parts of the world — how grassroots and accessible it really is. That changed how I saw the sport and pushed me toward doing deeper work in this space.
My background is in social work and community development, so I approached this film by looking beyond the game itself and focusing on access, structure, perception, and opportunity — especially in Urban communities in the U.S.
This isn’t just a sports story — it’s a cultural one. With the World Cup 2026 coming to the United States, the timing matters. My goal with this film is to open up a broader conversation about access, opportunity, and who gets to shape the future……..
